Industrial Machine Knitting Class

Industrial Machine Knitting Class is an ideal class if you have a basic understanding of machine knitting and you want to develop your textile design skills or experimental skills.  You’ll learn beautiful stitches and techniques and explore the use of colour, textured structures and stitch manipulation.

In this class, you’ll:

  • Gain a firm grasp of basic machine knitting skills for industrial (Dubied) hand flat knitting machines
  • Learn how to set up a Dubied knitting machine, including casting on and off, changing between different coloured yarns and how to blend and mix yarns together
  • Learn various stitch structures and techniques, such as needle layouts, hold stitch, tuck stitch, 2 x 2 rib, racking and selective needle use
  • Practice how to use a stitch transfer tool to create hand manipulation techniques for ladders, lace holes and freeform methods
  • Have a better understanding of knitwear yarns, machines and gauges

At the end of the class, you’ll create a technical folder with a collection of experimental swatches of techniques, stitch manipulation and knit structures. You will be able to develop these techniques further into your own designs experimenting with different textures and yarns to produce unique fabrics in a variety of weights for future projects.

Location: Islington, London

Tutor: Farah Govani is our resident machine knitting tutor. She has taught knitwear design skills to hundreds of students and hobbyists, both at beginner and more advanced levels.  She has also designed for London’s theatre district and for several celebrities, including Paloma Faith on Channel 4’s Celebrity Juice. Farah currently teaches at Chelsea College of Arts.

Machines used: Flat bed (Dubied) Knitting Machines

Equipment and Technical Notes: All equipment and yarns will be provided. A set of technical reference notes will be emailed to you after the class.

Refreshments: Tea and coffee facilities will be available throughout the class

Cancellation policy: We will be happy to refund your payment in full if you inform us of your cancellation 5 or more days before the class is due to take place.
